| Junior Judges delight in Daioni at Excellence Awards |
![]() Trioni Ltd, which produces the Daioni range of organic flavoured milk, was named best children's drink in the Excellence in Food Awards run by The Caterer and Hotelkeeper magazine. The annual awards recognise excellence in products aimed at the food service industry and is judged by top chefs and food critics. The 3663 sponsored children's category is also judged by a junior panel who enthused about the chocolate Daioni saying it had a "nice flavour, thick and bubbly". Pembrokeshire based Trioni developed its Daioni ('goodness' in Welsh) range of organic milk drinks as an alternative to the fizzy sugary drinks generally available for children, and launched them in 2003. "Winning this award is particularly gratifying for us as Daioni was designed for children and so to be chosen by the junior judges means we have achieved what we set out to do," said Trioni’s co-founder and managing director, Laurence Harris. "Our initial taste trials were conducted in schools in Pembrokeshire, and so we have come full circle," said Teleri Thomas, Trioni’s Marketing Manager who received the award from celebrity chef Aldo Zilli at the awards ceremony held at The Dorchester Hotel in London (November 23). Low in fat with no artificial colours or preservatives, the drinks are available in four flavours - chocolate, strawberry, banana, and cranberry & raspberry. It has been a good year for the family-run business. It picked up a gold medal at the 2007 Great Taste Awards, and was recently successful in its bid to be included in the framework contract for the Welsh Purchasing Consortium - which handles procurement for unitary authorities across South Wales - and Daioni will be available in schools across Swansea and Neath Port Talbot with the potential to be used by all 12 councils. Last week the True Taste award-winning company was at the BBC Good Food Show in Birmingham as part of the Welsh Assembly Government's True Taste Stand where the drinks were on sale to thousands of visitors. "Winning any award is great for our company as it is an independent endorsement of our products," says Teleri. The company has received a variety of assistance and is participating in the True Food Marketing scheme, which is supported by the Welsh Assembly Government. Among Daioni's fans are the Welsh Rugby Union and several top rugby clubs along with Tottenham Hotspur football club, and it is available across the UK as well as in Greece, Malta, Cyprus and Australia. | Gold Winning Daioni Scores Points for Wales |
![]() Medal Winners when The Guild of Fine Food Retailers' had their awards dinner for the 2007 'Great Taste Awards' during the 'Speciality and Fine Food Show' in London this week. This coveted award goes to a handful of fine food products each year and it is a rare accolade for a milk drink to be included. The strawberry semi-skimmed milk drink is one of a range of four flavours produced by Trioni Ltd : a family farming business headed up by Laurence Harris and his wife Eira at Ffosyficer Farms, Abercych located in beautiful North Pembrokeshire. Trioni Ltd who also distribute fresh organic milk throughout Wales developed the milk drinks in 2003 as an alternative to the fizzy sugary drinks available in schools,It is a great drink for children as it contains no artificial colour or preservatives, is naturally high in calcium and is low in fat and added sugar. However the semi-skimmed milk drink , which is also available in chocolate, banana and cranberry and raspberry flavour, is fast gaining popularity with sportspeople young and old as a recovery drink. High profile consumers of Daioni include the Welsh National Rugby Team who regularly order quantities of the drink when they are training together at their base in Hensol as well as other top Welsh rugby clubs and Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur Football Clubs. There is a growing body of scientific evidence which suggests that milk can play an important role in post-exercise and rehydration. Researchers from Loughborough University's School of Sports and Exercise Sciences report that volunteers in a recent trial remained hydrated after drinking milk but remained dehydrated after drinking equivalent amounts of water or isotonic sports drinks. According to researchers : 'The results suggest that milk is more effective at replacing sweat losses and maintaining euhydration than plain water or a commercially available sports drink following exercise-induced dehydration by approximately two per cent of initial body mass'. Said Dan King, nutritionist to the Welsh Rugby Union: 'The players like Daioni for its refreshing taste and the knowledge that it is is made from the best Welsh organic milk. The different flavours and convenient 250ml size offer the flexibility to use on its own as a balanced drink for a stop gap in between training and as part of their post training nutrition'. The Daioni flavoured milk which is supplied to the WRU by Castell Howell Foods is now available throughout the UK in good food stores, cafes and restaurants. It is also available in Tesco and Morrisons and more recently in Coop stores throughout Wales. Recent developments have seen the drink go to Greece, Malta and Cyprus and as far afield as Australia where it is proving to be very popular. |
